Sell the point, not the catalog

The central message is that answering “What’s your book about?” is mostly a sales test: describe can sound neutral, but you must sell the book’s unique assertion (why it matters, the mechanism, and the stakes) quickly.

Convert themes into testable claims

Weak answers sound like categories, but stronger ones use a single “my book argues that…” claim that includes mechanism and impact; it narrows the listener’s mental search space to what’s distinctive.

Replace generic praise with reason-specific proof

For both fiction and nonfiction, “great/amazing” are “badjectives” because they’re unfalsifiable; instead, specify what makes the story work by answering why it’s compelling or what drives the protagonist’s objective.
