A “spear throw” failed on time, weather

The Taiping tried a fast, light northern coup—until Qing learning, blocked supply time, and harsh winter shattered the vanguard; without held roads, both relief and retreat options collapsed.

Qing won by buying time, not fighting

Imperial tactics—phantom armies, burning granaries, river control—didn’t permanently stop the Taiping; they forced delays like a two-month siege at Huaiqing that made the campaign’s “bill” time-critical.

Winter and “water” made cavalry and guns moot

Once trapped, the Qing stopped using storming and instead surrounded and flooded prepared positions, ruining gunpowder and preventing shelter; winter then reduced the army to freeze-damaged survival.
